Apple Wireless Headphone: Specs and Prices of AirPods, AirPods 2 & AirPods Pro
Have you ever want to buy an AirPod or want to know more about these Apple wireless headphones before you purchase or recommend to someone? You’ll get the information you need here!
The tech giant – Apple is again spearheading the wireless headphone industry. We’ve since seen the removal of the headphone jack as far back as the iPhone 7, leaving us with Apple’s version of wireless headphones — AirPods.
This “courageous move” from Apple has now seen them go on to provide a much satisfying solution as well, which also seems to be a deal-breaker for some users. I personally prefer wired headphones to the earbuds, but Apple has done a great job in making the AirPods so good, that other headphones and smartphone manufacturers look up to it for inspiration.
Will they remain at the upper echelon of this industry, time alone will tell as other manufacturers seem to be coming up with impressive performance with their own products.
Apple has announced three iterations of their wireless earbuds — The AirPod, AirPod 2, and The AirPod Pro. We take a look at all three and see why they’re so good, and also, how much they cost currently.
Apple Wireless Headphone: The AirPods Price & Specifications
“The AirPods” is the first generation of the AirPods which was launched alongside the iPhone 7 back in 2016. You can still go ahead to purchase one, but let’s see what it has in store for us.
The AirPod DESIGN
Opening the case reveals the AirPods, which are held in place by magnetic poles that give it a good balance inside the case. They look, from the outside, like the EarPods that came with previous Apple phones. Essentially, you should expect them to fit in the same way as the EarPods.
The AirPod has a premium-looking design — as you would expect from an Apple product. The sides of the AirPods do perform some pretty good functions: A single tap on either side of the Pods lets you play/pause. You also get to initiate Apple’s digital assistant — Siri — by a double-tap. Apple released an update that would now let map these gestures according to your preference.
These, amongst other qualities, set the AirPods on a higher pedestal than other wireless headphones.
The AirPod Sound/Audio Quality
As far as sound quality goes, the Airpods are quite good, but not great. There isn’t much weight to the bass, but the treble is pretty okay. Overall, you get a good listening experience whether it’s your favorite artist’s song or a Netflix show.
Audio output on this pair of AirPods is basically the same as you would get on an iPhone. There isn’t much refinement to it, just pure Apple standard. Apparently, this should make for better call quality, in addition to the audio reception, when making calls.
The AirPod Battery Life
Again, The AirPod’s battery life is pretty okay — as you should expect from Apple. The AirPods could give you up to 5 hours of listening time, with 2 hours of talk time on a single charge.
According to Apple, having a full case plus full AirPods translates to about 24 hours of listening time and around 11 hours of talk time.
So, if you’re out of juice and still need to enjoy some good music, putting the Pods in the case will give you around 3 hours of listening time. Impressive.
EXTRAS – The AirPods
Apple’s wireless earbuds pack some cool features which we don’t often see on other brands: first and foremost is the play/pause feature which utilizes the accelerometer to detect when they are placed in the ears, or dropped on a surface.
So in essence, taking off one pair, or both from the ears automatically pauses the audio. Putting them back on will resume the song from where it left off. This feature for me is what makes them truly “wireless”.
The AirPods also bring a bit of cancellation which increases call clarity. This, added to its audio quality would keep you away from making calls using your phone.
The Price of the AirPods:
If you want to buy the AirPod (the first generation), it costs 159 US DOllar ($159) and that’s approximate to N62,000 in Nigeria
Now, let’s check the second generation of the Apple Wireless headphone, that’s the AirPods 2.
Apple Wireless Headphone: The AirPods 2 Price & Specifications
The AirPods 2 is the AirPods with an H1 chip and a wireless charging case! Nothing much here seems to be a major differentiator, just some basic internal tweaks.
The AirPod 2 DESIGN
Design-wise, there isn’t much to get excited about the Airpods 2. It’s still the same old plastic build, with some internal changes.
Most users, especially myself, would find these pairs of AirPods 2 unfitting in the ears. It is prone to falling off during physical activities, while working, or commuting through traffic. If you’ve got large ears, however, they should fit in perfectly.
The case is still the same build and size as its predecessor, however, the indicator light has now been brought to the front of the case. The port and Bluetooth pairing button still retain their position, with the addition of wireless charging support (more below).
The AirPods 2 Sound/Audio Quality
As far as sound goes, the Cupertino company didn’t do too much to enhance the listening experience from the previous model.
If you’re a normal user — which you should be, you would get pretty good sound quality for either music, podcasts, or movies.
The lack of isolation also plays a big role in sound quality — it doesn’t give you that immersive experience due to background noise. But overall, you would get an okay experience if you choose to go for this, but mind you, it’s the same sound/audio quality as the original AirPods.
The AirPods 2 BATTERY
The inclusion of the H1 headphone chip makes the AirPods 2 a much better pair in terms of battery life than the previous model. That said, you should get around 5 hours of listening and 2 hours of talk time if we’re to go with what’s in Apple’s promotional materials.
However, these figures may not be ideal as usage varies from person to person. A higher value of dB (decibels) would most likely give you much lower listening time, while a lower or medium volume should give you close to what is advertised.
On average, you shouldn’t expect less than 4 hours of listening time, which for me, is okay since you can top it up quickly by putting in the case; a 15 minutes charge would give you an additional 3 hours of usage.
EXTRAS – The AirPods 2
AirPods 2 has some interesting features which make it stand out. In the previous model, activating Siri is done by a single or double-tap. Things are much easier on this model as the usual “Hey Siri” would get the assistant up and ready.
I hinted earlier on wireless charging and yes, both the case and the Pods are compatible with Qi-wireless charging. Placing any of them on a Qi-wireless charging mat would give you enough juice, especially when you can’t find your cables.
Lastly, AirPods 2 have the Audio Sharing feature which now allows you to share audio with another pair of AirPods. So basically, you and a friend can now listen to your favorite song or podcast, using a single iPhone or iPad.
Activating this is quite simple: take the secondary AirPods with the case close to your phone. You would be prompt to connect, tap connect and viola, both of you can now listen with independent volume controls.
PRICE of the AirPod 2
The price of Apple’s AirPods 2 is 199 US Dollars or $199, and that’s approximately N78,000 in Nigeria.
Let’s check the third generation of these Apples Wireless headphones – The AirPods Pro.
Apple Wireless Headphone: The AirPods 2 Price & Specifications
I had to save this for the last. After a couple of years, Apple finally nailed the wireless headphone game with the new AirPods Pro. They learned from the flaws of the AirPods, taking the AirPods and making it better.
The AirPod Pro DESIGN
Aesthetically, these aren’t better than the original AirPods, but I don’t think it should matter much. These come with a short stem which may be inconvenient especially with gesture controls, but you get accustomed to it with time.
Moving forward, Apple listened to the complaints of previous AirPods users, and this time, they fit perfectly in your ears, thanks to the silicone ear tips in the AirPods Pro.
Unlike other wireless earbuds that use one-size-fits-all ear tips, these come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. You get to choose which fits in well in your ears, then get ready to have a truly immersive experience.
The AirPod Pro Sound/Audio Quality
Thanks to ANC (active noise cancellation), these pairs of earbuds get to sound better. Asides that, the new design in the AirPod Pro makes it possible to isolate surrounding noise which could impede your listening experience.
For music, videos, and podcasts, these sound much better. The mids have been improved, there’s also more weight to the bass. This gives you a better listening experience as an average user.
There are now three listening modes in AirPods Pro, they are:
- Noise Cancellation
- and Transparency mode.
Choosing the first mode will block all outside noise from peering in, so you’re fully engrossed in the music without distraction.
If you don’t prefer this, the other modes will come in handy. The second option turns ANC off and gives you a feeling like you don’t have the AirPods Pro in your ears. Transparency mode still offers a bit of noise cancellation but doesn’t filter out the entirety of external noise. This gives you a balance between the first two modes especially when walking down the street.
The AirPods Pro BATTERY
Expect a little more listening time with these than the previous models. Although the listening time between this and original AirPods vary slightly, you can get more or less time depending on what mode you’re on.
Using ANC and volume level set at 50% should give you about 4 hours and 30 minutes of listening time. The other modes will give you a little more than 5 hours. This is a good improvement from the older models.
The metallic case which also supports Qi-wireless charging can get you 24 hours of listening time. You can charge it using a Qi-wireless charging mat, or use the default USB-C-to-lightning cable.
The AirPod Pro PRICE
The price of the AirPod Pro is 249 US Dollar or $249, that is approximate N97,000
N.B. For you to use the AirPods Pro on your iPhone, your device needs to be running on iOS 13.2 or higher.
Conclusion: Apple Wireless Headphones – The AirPods, AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro
So, these are the iterations of the Apple wireless headphones, the AirPods. One thing worth mentioning is that the AirPods were optimized to work better in the Apple ecosystem, even though you can use it on Android. However, you wouldn’t have to smooth functionalities, and some features may be limited.
That said, the AirPods are pretty good for everyday use, for a normal user. It is not recommended for audiophiles, it’s not the best for a workout, and it still falls short in some other aspects. Still, yet, you get an overall good experience, especially as an iPhone or iPad user which is why they are, by all means, the best out there.
