In terms of specs and performance, these series are the least in the MacOS market, started in 2009, and the last which was in 2017. Be sure to note that the MacBooks below have all been discontinued, but you could still buy them at various online and offline stores.

MacBook (13 inches, 2009 variant)

So, in 2009 Apple started the MacBook series with the launch of the 13 inch MacBook.

MacBook (13 inches, 2010 variant)

The next year after the MacBook 13” 2009 Variant was launched, came the next MacBook with same screen size and some identical specs, but as with every upgrade – there are few changes. Let’s see them!

The RAM still remains but a larger ROM was provided (250GB HDD), same amount of ports provided but a different variant of NVIDIA GeForce graphics card – the 320M. An IR blaster for remote control is also supported in this model of the MacBook.

One major difference between this and its predecessor (MacBook 13” 2009 Variant) is the improvement in battery life, the battery on this variant could last up to 10 hours which is twice as much as that of its predecessor.

MacBook (Retina 12 inch, 2015 variant)

Apple skipped four years and came up with the all-new ultra-slim MacBook with Retina display. This variant marked the birth of new design schemes for the MacBook line.

For the specs, it comes with 8GB RAM and 512GB solid-state drive (SSD), a 64-bit 2.6GHz processor with Intel 5300 graphics card. Both primary and secondary storage on this MacBook can’t be upgraded.

For connectivity and battery, it comes with a 39.7Wh battery which should give you up to 9 hours on normal use. It also comes with a single USB Type-C port, earphone port, and other connectivity ports.

MacBook (Retina 12 inch, 2016 variant)

After a year and a month, the next MacBook came!

With the new MacBook came lots of improvement in terms of speed and efficiency, still the same 8GB RAM but a much faster intel processor and graphics card – the Intel Core m3 (M3-6Y30) and the Intel HD graphics 515.

Battery life is also much better as this variant of the MacBook comes with a 41.4 lithium polymer battery which should last you about 11 hours on normal usage. The secondary storage has been reduced also for increased speeds – it’s now half of that of its predecessor (256GB SSD).

MacBook (Retina 12 inch, 2017 variant)

As at the time of writing culminating this list, this is the last MacBook in this series and there’s little to suggest when the next MacBook will be launched, while we wait for it, let’s see what this has in stock for us.

This is the thinnest MacBook so far, but asides aesthetics the device packs 8 gigabytes of RAM with 256GB SSD ROM (1151/1544 MBps read and write speeds respectively). Unlike its predecessor, the RAM could be upgraded to 16GB but only at the time of purchase.

The battery life and capacity remain unchanged, but there are a much faster processor and graphics card.

After the MacBook, the next in the hierarchy is the MacBook Air series which was also started in 2009. The MacBook Air as the name suggest give you much more in terms of performance than the MacBook, but it packs all its goodies in a much thinner and lighter package.

MacBook Air (13 and 11 inches, 2010)

The second MacBook Air series was launched in the last Q of 2010 with two screen sizes – 13 and 11 inches. Both laptops have many similarities but just a few differences – in fact just three differences which are secondary storage, battery capacity, and processor speeds.

They both came with 2GB of RAM which could be upgraded to 4 at the time of purchase, NVIDIA GeForce 320 graphics card, two USB 2.0 ports, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity and Mac OS 10 operating system.

For the differences, the 13″ variant has two models for secondary storage, 128GB, and 256GB – the 11″, 64GB, and 128GB. The 13″ has a much better battery capacity – 71Wh and 35Wh lithium-ion battery.

MacBook Air (13 and 11 inches, 2011)

Continuing in the series, we see new changes – a much improved Bluetooth technology (Bluetooth 4.0). Also, the NVIDIA GeForce graphics wasn’t used, rather it was the Intel HD graphics processor.

Most of the specs from the previous year were continued, but the 13 inches variant now has a 50Wh battery capacity. Both laptops use a much faster Intel core i5 processor.

MacBook Air (13 and 11 inches, 2012)

One major change was made in this new line of the MacBook Air – the new USB 3.0 connectors which promises faster transfer and charge speeds. Another difference here is a much better RAM (4GB) which will cost you $100 to upgrade at the time of purchase but not later.

By mid-2013, Apple announced the new MacBook Air but with no major upgrade. This year, there was no difference in secondary storage as both PCs come with 128GB and 256GB SSD, RAM remains at 4GB but can be upgraded to 8GB as at when purchased.

MacBook Air (13 and 11 inches, 2014)

The next PC from Apple after the MacBook Air 2013 is the 2014 version. It was introduced the next year and still retains most of the specifications – 2GB RAM with 128GB/256GB ROM options, a 64 bits Intel core i5 processor with Intel HD graphics processor.

MacBook Air (13 inches, 2017)

So, after two years of silence from Apple, the tech giants released the next Air! Some key things to note; Apple now focused on producing just 13 inches retina displays.

There was no release from Apple until late 2018 where they announced the 2018 version of the MacBook Air.

8GB RAM and a 128GB or 256GB of secondary storage, two thunder-bolts USB type-C connector ports, Bluetooth 4.0, and an improved Intel UHD graphics processor. The primary and secondary storage can only be upgraded at the time of purchase and not after.

In 2012, Apple stopped the triple model system, thereby making only two devices – 13” and 15”.

2014 saw some improvements in the design schemes of the MacBook Pro, both 13″ and 15″ has some nice features you’ll surely love.

MacBook Pro (13 and 15 inch – 2015)

2015 came and the next Pro was launched in Q1 of 2015. The 13″ and 15″ still retained the same specs as its predecessor with few differences.

We had an increment in the battery of both variant as the 13″ and 15″ packs 74.9 and 99.5 watts per hour batteries respectively. The 15″ now used the Radeon R9 graphics card while the baseline model retained the Intel Iris.

MacBook Pro (13 and 15 inch – 2016)

By 2016 we saw some major changes in the Pro line. Although primary storage configuration still remained unchanged, secondary storage specs for the 13″ is locked at 256GB, while the 15″ has been 256GB and 512GB model.

MacBook Pro (13, 15, and 16 inch – 2019)

This is the last release of the MacBook Pro – the 2019 variant. The MacBook Pro 2019 come in 3 models, 16″, 15″, and 13″.

The 16 inch is somewhat special but comes after the 15″ in terms of sophistication. The 15 and 16 has the same amount of primary storage and secondary storage, but the latter could be expanded to 64GB, while the former, 32GB. They all use Intel processors – the 15″ spotting a core i9, 16″, and core i7 and core i5 for the 13″.

The 13″ has a 256GB and 512GB variant, while the other two comes with 512GB which could be expanded up to 4TB. The 16″ MacBook marks the first Apple PC to be powered by a 100Wh battery, the 15 and 13 are powered by 83.6Wh and 58Wh batteries respectively.
