iPhone 12 Pro Max Review
The Camera: iPhone 12 Pro Max
Obviously, the biggest talking points about the iPhone 12 Pro Max has to be this – the camera module! In terms of numbers, it’s not the biggest when compared to other non-iOS smartphones. But in terms of quality on display, the iPhone does a great job.
A big shout out to Apple, by the way, they’ve improved greatly in their computational photography and we get to see that here again. This, plus camera hardware improvements combines to produce some of the best looking photos from a smartphone camera.
Speaking of hardware, we’ve got a triple 12MP camera array at the back of this device. First is the main lens at f/1.6 aperture. We’ve got a 12MP telephoto lens with 2.5x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide lens with an aperture of f/2.4. At the bottom of the camera array, we got the LiDAR scanner which helps in light control.
There’s no EIS or OIS on this edition of the iPhone 12. However, we’ve got a much better system in place – sensor-shift stabilization. The iPhone 12 Pro Max camera also supports Dolby Vision HDR and 10-bit HDR–the first smartphone camera to do so.
The front camera sits just right above the display. It’s also a 12MP lens which also doubles as a biometric scanner for Apple’s Face ID. Both front and back shoots videos in 4K and 1080P but the main camera takes it a notch higher with Dolby Vision HDR and 10-bit HDR.
The Design/Display: iPhone 12 Pro Max
If you still crave the nostalgia of having the iPhone 5, then you’re definitely going to love the 12. Apple decided to bring back the boxy design to its twelfth generation of the iPhone and it looks so good. The iPhone 12 Pro Max spots an all-glass body with stainless steel framing. Both sides of the device are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Apple gets a little generous at the front with a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. While we wait for Apple to start supporting the in-display fingerprint scanner, we have to make do with Face ID.
And for some unknown reason, the notch still remains in this generation of the iPhone. Though an 87.4% screen-to-body ratio is ideal in today’s smartphone world, the Notch takes your viewing angles a notch lower (pun intended).
At the bottom, we’ve got the thunderbolt port (No USB-C) flanked by the double firing stereo speakers which sound good. The back of the iPhone 12 Pro Max looks clean.
We have the camera array at the top with Apple’s branding in the middle below it. All these, combined with good colors, makes this the best looking iPhone for me. Do let me know what you think in the comments.
Battery/Power: iPhone 12 Pro Max
We’ve seen improvements in the battery life of the iPhone in the last couple of years. The trend continues on the iPhone 12 Pro Max which comes with a 3687mAh battery. It’s a little lower than what we got on the 11 Pro Max but the software improvements and chipsets make up for the disparity.
This device supports fast-charging up to 20W, Qi wireless charge up to 15W. Standby time is superb and the same can be said about screen-on time.
To power the device, you’ll be purchasing your own power adapter as Apple, due to environmental risk factors, decided to cut down on harmful waste by not shipping the power adapter with the box. Unless you’re getting an iPhone for the first time, you should own a charging adapter already. It however ships with a thunderbolt-to-USB-C cable.
Sadly, we have to keep waiting for the USB-C iPhone. Are we going to get the USB Type-C on the iPhone 13? Or, with Apple trying to go portless, and with the introduction of MagSafe to the iPhone, should we expect a portless iPhone and just forget about USB Type-C? Feel free to share your thoughts on this in the comments.
Storage/Memory: iPhone 12 Pro Max
Yet again, another slight upgrade from its predecessor. Apple decided to bump the storage and RAM capacity on the Pro Max and rightly so. We have three storage options on the iPhone 12 Pro Max which include 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
With the new camera system, it was imperative to bump up the base storage as these high-quality images would quickly fill up your space. The RAM also got upgraded to 6GB from the previous 4GB. This is enough to run day-to-day tasks.
Software: iPhone 12 Pro Max
So, we got a big announcement from Apple in a long while. It was an upgrade to its iOS platform. It was the biggest upgrade we’ve witnessed in a long while. Apple decided to loosen its restriction on iOS users as it released the iOS 14.
We did a round-up of the iOS 14 Update here, do check it out. Moving on, the new software from Apple looks really good on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. When compared to the previous version of iOS, this latest version gets the job done while giving you a clutter-free UI.
Performance: iPhone 12 Pro Max
When talking about device overall performance, Apple gets the nod for this above other OEMs. This is what you get when the hardware and software components are made by you.
We get the A14 Bionic chipset which has been ranked as the best SoC in 2020. Not just the best, its 5nm+ process makes it the fastest processor on a smartphone and the first smartphone to spot a 5nm+ chipset.
Using the device, you get a fluid operation even though there is no high or variable refresh rate like we have on the iPad Pro. Using a device of its price range, you get nothing but top-of-the-line performance.
While we wait for 5G to go mainstream, Apple has taken the liberty to support the 5G network on the iPhone 12 series. You can get 5G coverage–especially sub 6-millimeter waves–on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. And to conserve power, there’s a dynamic network switching feature that enables 5G only when needed.
Another interesting feature that makes the iPhone 12 Pro Max special is the MagSafe support. This allows the use of different MagSafe accessories like wireless chargers or wallets to be snapped at the back of the iPhone.
This is the first version and as expected, it has a few glitches here and there. Most especially when it comes to the grip at the back: a little force may push off the attached accessory. We expect improvements in the coming iPhones.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max which has an IP68 water and dust rating comes in three colors: Silver, Graphite Gold, and Pacific Blue.
